Course Details

A unique learning experience

Our course offers a unique learning experience that encourages self-expression and originality. We believe in fostering a safe learning environment where everyone can learn at their own pace while having fun! Let our drama coaches take you through a step-by-step guided process so that you can create your own play. You will be guided drama skills, and learn the ropes of producing a fairy tale story from start to show day!

Develop creative thinking and gain confidence

Our course will help you develop improvisation, and creative thinking skills that can be applied to any situation. During the course, you will work closely 4 to 5 with other students, and practise teamwork, communication skills, and many other skills. You will learn how to express yourself in powerful ways that can be used across many different areas of life.

The course consists of 6 sessions of 1h 30min each, excluding rehearsal and production time.
Session 1: Intro to tableau and mime. Story creation.
Session 2: Sound story & role play. Character and scene creation.
Session 3: Movement & Voice. Script preparation.
Session 4: Character improvisation. Stage direction & spatial awareness.
Session 5: Costume selection and presentation of play with costume and props
Session 6: Game, Movement & Voice. Rehearsal

Self-directed Life partners up with seasoned teacher and performer, Claris Tan, to organise a creative drama production that supports children on their own self-directed journey. The course fees includes Performance Joining Fee of $45 /pax, which all participants of the production will pay. Once you are registered in the course, you do not need to separately register for the production. Should you not be participating in the production, but are still keen to attend the course, please write us a note and we will waive the Performance Joining Fee.

Performance Joining Fee includes:

• 1 off-stage rehearsal on 4th June 2023, Sunday, 9am – 11.30am in Aljunied
• 1 full dress on-stage rehearsal on Production day 10th June 2023, Saturday, 9am – 1pm
• Rental of basic costumes
• 2 General Admission tickets worth $10 each

Note: Low likelihood of make up classes available. Please ensure you make the necessary preparations, although missing a couple of classes will not affect the child’s ability to take part in production day.

About Claris Tan

Claris Tan is an actor, singer, and theatre practitioner from Singapore. She graduated from LASALLE College of the Arts with a BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre in 2018. Her professional acting career started at the age of 4, and she made her movie debut in I Not Stupid II in 2006. Selected theatre credits include: Hutan (Sensorium Theatre, Perth), In Pieces (⅞ Musical Collective), Mars I Do This? (Zip Zap Zoom Collective), The Amazing Celestial Race (Wild Rice), Little Red Riding Hood in an Indonesian production of Into the Woods (Teman Musikal Nusantara), the Mandarin version of Cat In the Hat (Singapore Repertory Theatre), One Kind of Science Musical (Players’ Theatre), The Great Wall: One Woman’s Journey (Glowtape Productions), ensemble in The Tempest (SRT) and Caucasian Chalk Circle (SRT Young Co). Selected film credits include: Codetta (Viddsee), Waiting For You (Viddsee), Kin (Mediacorp), and Mata Mata 3 (Mediacorp).

Apart from being a performer, Claris has also exercised her ability as a creative through various platforms. She is one of the co-founders of Zip Zap Zoom Collective, a TYA-focused collective. Under Zip Zap Zoom, Claris worked as an actor and co-playwright on Zip Zap Zoom Collective’s children’s theatre production, Mars I Do This?, in collaboration with The Artground and Science Centre Singapore. She also directed a TYA show entitled Pop!, which premiered at the opening weekend of Children’s Museum Singapore. She was also one of the directors, as well as the music composer for a children’s immersive experience entitled Blast Off!, that was created by Zip Zap Zoom Collective under The Artground’s Groundbreakers programme. Claris is also currently working with the children’s team in Esplanade as one of the facilitators for the SEEDLINGS programme, which seeks to develop child-centric artistic experiences by allowing the selected children to engage and respond to the children’s programming at Esplanade. In PLAYlab+ 2020 under Esplanade, Claris directed Transportation, a devised sensory experience for children with additional needs. As a performer for devised work, Claris has worked with Sensorium Theatre from Australia in Hutan, a commissioned work for National Museum Singapore and the Awesome Festival in Perth. She was also a collaborator and singer in several devised cabarets, including 2 cabarets for Esplanade’s Concourse programmes: Red Dot August and From Books to Broadway. Being familiar with mascot choreography, she has also worked as a choreographer for PJ Masks Sunway Pyramid in Kuala Lumpur.

About New School Learning Dojo

New School Learning Dojo is a microschool curated by Sheryl Ang to provide opportunities for children to attend classes in a child-centered and self-directed way. It is the in-practice arm of the advocacy work done by Self-directed Life. Self-directed life coaches parents and educators to parent and educate mindfully, and respectfully.

By enrolling to a course offered by New School Learning Dojo “Dojo”, you agree to the following terms: 1. I understand that this is a self directed learning dojo to support children at their level, wherever they are at. We may have diverse views but share the same beliefs to support our children as individuals in a secular way. I will leave my personal views including but not limited to political, religious, LGBTQ, vaccination, inclusivity views at the door. Note: Outside of the classroom, you may take what you/ your child have learnt as you deem fit for your own family. Remember that what fits / works for you may not be what will fit / work for others, so best to keep it outside of the classroom. 2. I will NOT send my child to if they are sick or still exhibiting symptoms of illness. These symptoms include but are not limited to: headache, fever, sore throat, nausea, sneezing, coughing and other cold, and flu like symptoms. If a child is recovering from their illness, please wear a mask. 3. It is my duty to inform the Dojo if I've been traveling 14 days before the day of my child's class. If my child contracts, or otherwise comes into contact with a person who has, or is suspected to have COVID-19, I will immediately notify the Dojo and refrain from attending any classes. 4. In the event that classes are held outdoors, the Dojo reserves the right to cancel class 1 hour before the event. Generally, we abide by the "no weather is bad weather with the right clothing" philosophy, unless there is warning of lightning. 5. In the event that classes are held in a place that requires you to prove yours or your child's vaccination status, you agree to inform us of your vaccination preference, and understand that you or your child will not be able to attend the class. 6. Permission is granted for me and/ or my child to be photographed, recorded, and/or videotaped in any form of media for the purposes of assessment, planning, evaluation, documentation in the class, in blogs/ newsletters, public or private events, and for publicity. Such photograph(s), video recording(s) shall remain the property of the dojo, and Self-directed Life. 7. Make up/ refund policy: Limited make up opportunities. Term dates are provided before the start of each term. Should you not be able to make it for a specific class, you are required to inform us before the start of the term. In the event of unforeseen sickness, you agree to make attempts to make up for classes, including attending an online session or classes in the future terms. You should also seek reasonable effort to seek the Dojo's approval to find a replacement on your own. Refunds may be made only as a last resort, and is entirely discretionary. A discretionary amount of admin fee may also be chargeable. Please understand that this Dojo is meant to operate on a cost recovery basis, and not as a profit center, and being honourable about your committment here is an appreciation to our work. 8. The Dojo reserves the right to cancel the course offered or change the terms at any point in time.
